State Projects Driving Electrification
Several ongoing and planned technology deployments across the state are positioning Utah as a national leader in electrification.
Utah is strategically advancing electrification projects that promote enhanced mobility, clean air, and economic growth through high-quality job creation. Backed by strong public and private investment the state is building a strong foundation for a connected, electrified future.
Operation Gigawatt
Operation Gigawatt is a bold energy initiative launched by Utah Governor Spencer Cox to double the state’s power production over the next decade in response to a growing energy crisis. Driven by rising electricity demands from population growth, electric vehicles, AI, and the retirement of aging power plants, the initiative aims to secure Utah’s energy future while preserving its status as a net energy exporter. The strategy focuses on four key pillars: expanding and diversifying energy production, increasing grid transmission capacity, modernizing energy policies to support clean and reliable sources like nuclear and geothermal, and investing in innovation and research. Operation Gigawatt positions Utah as a national leader in sustainable and resilient energy development.

Project Megawatt
Project Megawatt represents a groundbreaking leap in electric vehicle infrastructure, led by Utah’s commitment to innovation in freight electrification. At its core is the world’s first 1 Megawatt wireless charger—a technology capable of delivering ultra-fast, 30-minute wireless charging to heavy-duty electric trucks. The project will power FALCON, a battery-electric Kenworth semi, as it delivers parcels from the UPS Regional Facility at the Utah Inland Port to destinations like Cache Valley and Provo/Orem. These real-world freight routes, using Rocky Mountain Doubles through challenging terrain and climate, will showcase the viability of high-capacity, zero-emission logistics in Utah’s growing electrified ecosystem.
UTA Central Depot District Garage
The Utah Transit Authority’s Central Depot District Garage, inaugurated in May 2023, plays a pivotal role in advancing the agency’s fleet electrification goals. Equipped with charging facilities for up to 24 electric buses, the garage supports UTA’s transition toward cleaner transportation options. As of December 2024, electric buses comprise approximately 8% of UTA’s bus fleet, with plans to increase this to 36% by 2040 . The facility’s design also includes infrastructure for compressed natural gas buses, reflecting a comprehensive approach to alternative fuel adoption .

Statewide Fleet Mapping & Outreach
Our Fleet Outreach Project is focused on developing a comprehensive map of fleet operators across the state. This map will allow us to identify and engage with stakeholders who are most likely to adopt heavy-duty electrified transportation. By aligning infrastructure upgrades with existing market dynamics, we aim to optimize adoption models and ensure strategic deployment of resources.
